About Celtic Woman
In 2004, composer David Downes created Celtic Woman to celebrate the legacy of Irish music. Today, Celtic Woman gives concerts around the world. The group is comprised of fiddle player Mairead Nesbitt, along with singers Chloe Agnew, Lynn Hilary, Alex Sharpe, and Lisa Kelly. David Downes, who also worked on Riverdance, acts as musical director of the group.
The ensemble’s 2005 debut album, Celtic Woman, was a phenomenal success and led to sales of discount Celtic Woman tickets. Number one on Billboard’s World Music Chart for 68 weeks, the album included the songs “Orinoco Flow” and “She Moved Thru’ the Fair.” In 2006, the artists recorded A New Journey at Slane Castle in County Meath, Ireland, with soprano Hayley Westenra. Other Celtic Woman albums include A Christmas Celebration and The Greatest Journey: Essential Collection.
The members of Celtic Woman have changed several times. One of the original soloists, Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, left the group in 2007 to work on solo concerts. In 2006, Hayley Westenra sang with Celtic Woman. Music is an important part of Irish heritage, and Celtic Woman sings a mixture of traditional Irish songs, such as “Danny Boy” and “Isle of Inisfree,” and new Celtic Woman songs.
Celtic Woman’s success inspired other musicians such as the Irish ballad group, The High Kings, and a male Celtic music group.
